Import Restrictions

Senders should determine import restrictions from the country's authorities before posting:

• alcohol
• angling gear,fishing equipment
• ammunition
• beer
• flowers
• hair, bristles
• live animals
• medicines
• milk
• plants
• riding clothes
• tobacco and tobacco products
• telephone and communication equipment
• toxic and hazardous substances
• wines and liqueurs
• wool.

Prohibited Items

In addition to items considered non-mailable matter, the following are prohibited:

• animal products
• bees
• dairy products
• eggs
• foodstuffs
• fish
• fresh foods
• graphite Products
• knives
• lead toys
• liquids
• meat and meat products
• narcotics
• rags
• sacks or bags, used
• silkworms
• straw and hay, including when used as packaging
• tobacco,chewing tobacco, powdered snuff
• used saddles, bristles, muzzles
• uncooked meat products, milk and eggs
• x-rays
• weapons.

Commercial goods mailed to Iceland require an invoice in duplicate. Iceland requires an import permit for many goods. Before posting any item, senders should confirm that the addressee has any necessary permit.

The following documents may be required:

1. Commercial Invoice

2. Permits or Certificates

3. Bills/invoices covering cost of delivery other than stated on the commercial invoice (freight, packing, insurance and forwarding charges and fees)

4. Import Declaration

Custom Procedures:

The Directorate of Customs examines all shipments arriving in Iceland and determines whether or not they are subject to excise duty. If an item is deemed duty-free, it is treated as though duty has been paid and delivered to the recipient by Iceland Post’s distribution network.

A simple report may be used for an item of mail going through the customs procedure if: its total value is less than ISK 40,000; the import is not trade related; and an invoice is attached.

Customs declaration must be completed for mail with a total value of more than ISK 40,000. Iceland Post deals with customs declarations with the authorization of the recipient.
